I'm not sure, but I think it comes from a one time reduction in the value of their tax loss carry forward amounts.

Except I can't recall when Lam actually lost money. Probably back in '07-08. But I'm sure that they have run through any NOL's from that time since then.
It looks like they haven't shown a GAAP loss since early 2010...

Perhaps when they bought NVLS they got a lot of depreciation and/or losses.

My bet is it is related to the impairment of tangible assets.

If the future deductibiity of those impairments has been reduced by the future tax laws -that necessitates a re-evaluation of the impairment as it relates to future deductibility and justifies the accelerated expense in the current quarter.

Not sure on that but it is my best guess.
