Phil--Now why would you send the Secretary of Defense out like this, sending what kind of message? Something an enforcer might deliver? U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen assured financially-battered Asia on Sunday that Washington was a steady military and economic ally "in good times and bad,'' but stressed the need for reforms in the region to end an economic crisis. Cohen spoke to reporters who flew with him to Malaysia's capital from Washington at the start of a major 12-day Asia tour that will also take him to Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, China, Japan and South Korea for security talks. "It is to convey and reinforce to the peoples of the region that the United States is a friend and a solid ally in good times and in bad,'' he said of his trip. He cited the U.S. military presence in Asia and Washington's support for a push by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to shore up staggering Asian economies. "I think they (Asian states) are looking at a loss of confidence in some of their economies by virtue of some of the past practices which have to be reformed,'' Cohen said, adding that he would convey that reform message to Indonesia's President Suharto later on his trip. But he also told reporters on the 20-hour, non-stop flight to Kuala Lumpur that he did not feel that panic among the people of states like Indonesia, where stock markets and currencies have plummeted, would spark civil unrest. "I don't foresee that degenerating,'' Cohen said. "That is precisely the reason that the IMF, the United States, is seeking to provide confidence to each of the countries and to the people.'' Sure sounds like "gunboat diplomacy" to me!! How long before the shooting starts?
