Larry, I bought a machine like that last May, except my DD is 3.2GB
and it's an ordinary CD-ROM and a 33kbaud modem: $1,500

And I thought that was a great price. :(

Too bad Jubak got the specs all wrong. The Compaq emphatically does not have a 6.5G drive or a DVD-ROM.

Has anyone noticed you can get a similar deal from HP, but with Intel Inside? It's my opinion that HP got preferential pricing to expand the segment zero market, a deal that was withheld from Compaq because of her cheating heart. This wouldn't be the first time Intel has had to resort to kicking Compaq around a little to make them toe the line.

<<But take a look at what CPQ is selling for less than $1000.
Would you believe
200 MHz chip
6.4 GB Hard Drive>>
Good to see large drives making their way into low priced PCs (actually, its pretty surprising). I'd think there's a good chance the drive is a Bigfoot. Quantum hasn't been too vocal about this but it seems to me that the ideal drive for a budjet PC is a single platter, 4 GB Bigffot. Wouldn't be surprised to see this product start to pick up somre significant share and hopefuly excess capacity will keep others from following.

<< Since 14% of its sales go to Asia, we could even see bad news
from Compaq in this period, before the mathematics of
lower costs kicks in.

Among these sales to Asia, over 60% were made to China, whose growth rate has not yet been eroded yet, at least not in 1997. So I think CPQ should make the quarter, just my 2 cents.
