That is a point that's had me pretty confused. Dempsey called it "long for late delivery" or something like that.

I asked my on-line broker some time back about selling a stock for which I've got a cert here. I was told that since it was a BB stock, I would have to send the cert to them first because I can't sell a BB stock short. And it would be considered short since there would be no shares in my account until I'd transferred them.

I'm going to double-check this tomorrow with all of my on-line brokers. I'll ask them what if I sold something right now, and FedEx'd the cert.

I would assume this isn't a problem for those who use a local full-service brokerage, since they could drive the cert over there, sign it over, and sell it. But I've been led to believe that if you're holding the cert, it's not marketable until it's been transferred.
