I think I read somewhere that the decision to part ways with Smith was more financial than anything else. Smith was due something like $24M+ plus, and at his age, the front office decided to invest elsewhere. I think that, given their druthers, they would have preferred to keep Smith, but they just couldn't use up such a large chunk of money on a guy who may (or may not) have only a few good years left. And Smith would have become a free agent either way. Let some one else deal with his free agent status when it comes.
