Clinton,

I heard on CNBC that the sell-off in HK was partially caused by the possibility of one of their financial firms liquidating. I would think that Japan may have also heard that rumor, before they opened.

Additionally, I believe that there may be some early indicators such as futures trades/etc which hinted of the big decline, prior to the JAPAN open. If there is such a indicator, would presume that it was probably down a huge amount, in light of the 680 point gap down in HK.
