(AP) -- Doug Flutie is expected to come to terms on a two-year contract with the Buffalo Bills today, according to a published report, and make his third try at the NFL. The quarterback will leave the Canadian Football League for a contract that gives him a base salary of $300,000, the minimum for an NFL veteran player, and a signing bonus of about $50,000, sources told The Buffalo News. A number of incentive clauses -- including individual statistical accomplishments and league-wide honors -- could bring the total value of the contract as high as $5 million over two seasons. The 35-year-old Flutie is due to return to his Natick, Mass., home from a Hawaii vacation on Monday. It was unclear exactly when he will sign the contract with the Bills because he remains under contract with the Toronto Argonauts through Feb. 15. Although the Bills have not given Flutie any assurances he will be their starter, coach Wade Phillips told him by telephone last weekend he would have a chance to compete for the No. 1 job, the newspaper reported. The Bills are expected to acquire at least one more quarterback through free agency or the draft to go along with Flutie and incumbents Todd Collins and Alex Van Pelt. Third-stringer Jim Ballard will be sent to the World League of American Football. The 5-foot-10 Flutie spent the last two seasons with the Argonauts. He was paid a guaranteed salary that was worth about $650,000 in U.S. dollars. Flutie failed two previous bids in the NFL, with Chicago and New England from 1986 through 1989. After winning the 1994 Heisman Trophy at Boston College, he began his pro career in 1985 with the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League.
