Potential bargain:

WELL KNOWN TO MANY, BELOVED BY FEW:

GEMS, Glenayre Technologies.

GEMS designs, manufactures, markets and services switches, transmitters, receivers, controllers, software and other equipment
used in personal communications systems (voice messaging, mobile telephone, and message management systems).

According to Yahoo!, book value is 8 5/8. Stock is at 10 3/4. Market cap is $650 mil. Trading at 11X next year's EPS. Last time I checked wireless phones were still a growth area. You'll see higher valuations on a lot of companies with no earnings in this field.

Another possible 'future growth' play is Iridium. (IRIDF). It was mentioned on the Red Herring top picks of 1998 list as a potential second option underneath one of their 10 picks. (It seems to me their second options were always more attractive.) It is also on Hot Subjects today on SI!

Now Iridium is a real interesting pick...given that as yet it has no revenues! (Iridium World Communications Ltd. is a member of Iridium LLC engaging in the development and commercialization of a global mobile wireless communications system that will enable subscribers to send and receive telephone calls anywhere in the world.)

Acc. to Red Herring though Iridium could be the safest bet of all these kinds of companies because they will be first to market and will begin earning sooner. This might not be the world's best investment, but I happen to think it's a pretty cool emerging technology. Somewhere in this field there are bound to be opportunities...don't really know if IRIDF is 'it' though. I wouldn't mind getting work with them (Hamilton, Bermuda). <g>

They do have 46 satellites in the air in any case and plan to launch their service in Fall 1998. The co. is now valued at $400 million.

Now the emergence of Iridium and even larger concerns in this global wireless satellite "system" area raises concerns for me about a pick such as KVHI...or is it an opportunity...or is it neither....I don't know. If KVHI has carved out a niche having to do with navigation then perhaps it has high growth potential. Or is KVHI's system going to seem like a proprietary, awkward system compared to the more standardized offerings from larger concerns? (As you can see I know little about it.)
