TO ALL: Just received a response from Glaxo-Wellcome. Note that I do not know the date this was written.Bold and italics are mine Subject: RE: Y2K - Embedded Systems Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 15:04:10 -0000 From: "Rees, Elizabeth" <eer33734@GlaxoWellcome.co.uk> To: "'vpelt@jetcity.com'" <vpelt@jetcity.com> Article in Staff Magazine Year 2000 programme steps up a gear Glaxo Wellcome plc's Year 2000 programme, the project addressing the impact of the millennium change on the company's IS systems, has stepped up a gear. A steering committee has been established to monitor progress, adjudicating on priorities, contingency arrangements and other significant issues. A Group Year 2000 audit will be carried out in the first quarter of the new year to assess the adequacy of the company's processes to manage the risks caused by the date change. And Charlotte Newton, Group Finance IS manager and Year 2000 programme manager for plc, will meet in early January with the nominated business sponsors. These are the representatives from each business area accountable for ensuring the level of millennnium compliance in their systems, services and suppliers in their part of the company meets their needs. "A lot of work has already been done preparing for the millenium but several people have asked what the business needs to do now about Year 2000," Charlotte says. "It would certainly help if people could collate information about their department's suppliers and business partners, locate any contracts or legal agreements with them and be ready to identify those on whom they have a critical dependency. "Early in the new year the sponsors will review this information with the 'vendor manager', who is responsible for managing the Year 2000 element of Glaxo Wellcome plc's relationship with suppliers and business partners."It would also be useful if people could start identifying any departmental systems, unsupported software, including spreadsheets, or devices that IS may be unaware of." Hopefully embedded systems have since been identified. Charlotte adds: "The important thing is that Year 2000 compliance is now everyone's responsibility. The time for planning is finished: we now need to get things done and each member of staff has to be involved in the process. And remember that Year 2000 will affect home appliances too!" Glaxo Wellcome's Executive Committee has endorsed the importance of a strategic focus on Year 2000 compliance. Jacques Lapointe, Business Development and Information Systems director, comments: "Ensuring the integrity of our systems with regard to the Year 2000 issue must be one of our key corporate priorities in 1998, despite the fact that it does not help our sales line and actually conflicts with our profitability objectives in a very difficult budget year. You can see why companies are reluctant to publicize Y2K efforts when a global company like this is stating profit objectives will be compromised by Y2K analysis and remediation. "This is both critical and urgent, since it involves risk to business continuity."..........Philip Connolly vpelt
