True enough Larry, "As for assuming a higher price means better quality, we all might be surprised as to the percentage of people that actually believe that." I agree completely that our thinking processes are a fumbling bundle of guesswork, prejudices on previous experience, simply stupidity, wishful thinking, rules of thumb and dumb luck. Unfortunately for us, we have no other option given that our heads are made of mush and have only about a litre of "thinking" "free will generating" goo inside. We either use that, or use a slogan to think for us, or get somebody else to tell us what to do. Some use computers to tell them what to do - if you are wanting to play chess against Kasparov, that would be a good idea.

But nature is a cruel beast, unsympathetic to the ignorant, stupid, naive and greedy = all of us. Nature's simple test is you either find an ecological niche or die. If people pay too much for a cellphone, then their chances of maintaining their ecological niche decline and the inexorable law of the jungle is that the efficient survive. Apple thought they were going well for half a decade, even a decade, taking out boastful advertisements that welcomed IBM to the micro world. But they were charging too much, and getting things wrong.

So Iridium might get quite a lot of customers. Given its lead, it certainly will. With high demand, it will probably fill and make heaps of profit. But the evolutionary advantage is to Globalstar [unless something more efficient comes along such as demand-led pricing], so Globalstar will make more profit and be better able to fund developments to expand and improve service.

"One born every minute" is not a business proposition I care to back - although it is absolutely true and I include me as being one of those born every minute.

Actually, Iridium could be playing Globalstar for a fool and they might come out with demand-led pricing and simply undercut Globalstar's price on average, making their profit by charging more at busy times in busy areas. Charge half as much and make twice as much. But the thinking required for that will challenge nearly all of you readers who will be bogged down in anachronistic thinking derived from the days when rules came from above. Edict from church, government, head office, the boss, the alpha male tough guy. Humans run on peripheral processing now - at least they are heading that way.

Think of the Web as an analogue. The Web provides the structure and information, the people on the periphery do the thinking. In peripheral processing and pricing in the cellular world, the individual holding the handset uses the central structure and pricing information to decide instantaneously whether they want to make a call at that price. Yes Mike D! Rabid is the word for me.
