Investment Tracker debuts CNNfn, Sun Microsystems team up to offer portfolio-management tool January 12, 1998: 1:04 p.m. ET NEW YORK (CNNfn) - CNNfn.com today debuts an investment tracking tool designed to let Internet users stay ahead of the volatile financial markets. The beta version of Investment Tracker, developed in cooperation with Sun Microsystems, uses Java technology as well as software developed by Marimba Inc. Investment Tracker allows users to follow prices for stocks and major market indexes automatically. The information is stored privately on the user's computer, and consistently updates itself via a connection to the CNNfn servers. The application is now available for free download to a limited number of beta testers. When the final version is ready, the service will be available to everyone on the Internet. For those who download the beta, the software will automatically update to the latest version. Craig Forman, vice president of CNNfn Interactive, said CNNfn's cooperation with Sun will provide users with state-of-the-art technology for investment tracking while assuring prompt delivery and privacy. "By adding the CNNfn investment tracker to our free product offerings online, we are providing our audience with the kind of value-added resources users have come to expect from the leading web site for personal finance," Forman said. Bill Correll, Sun's marketing manager for media and publishing, said the investment tracker is a perfect example of a useful, real-world Java application. "By using Sun technology, from the server on the back end to a Java application on the desktop, CNNfn.com is providing its users with a tool that exemplifies how cutting-edge technology can impact the fast-paced world of corporate finance," Correll said. Investment Tracker was developed at CNNfn using Marimba's Castanet, a Java-based technology designed to automatically distribute and update software applications and content using the Internet. The application is delivered through a custom Java database. To use the new service, users must first download and install the free Castanet tuner. Versions are available for Windows 95 and NT and Solaris machines. The company offers unsupported versions for a variety of other platforms. Netscape Communications Corp.'s Netcaster also incorporates Marimba's Castanet technology. Users can access the investment tracker without installing additional software.
