Sibe, Jeff hit the most important point in his last post. A tool can work great, but if the operator runs into any problems, even of his own making, he will have a negative opinion of the tool and the vendor. A secondary issue is that licensing to 3rd party service providers does little to establish a post-Y2K relationship. Let's assume that Peritus has a great Y2K tool which they license to Computer Sciences, who successfully remediates a client's code. The next time that client needs help w/ a major IT project involving conversion/translation/migration, the first name to pop into their mind will be? Yep, CSC. Peritus will then have to hope that CSC chooses them again. When Alydaar's Y2K clients need future work, they will remember that Alydaar handled their Y2K problem and that it was Alydaar that provided the great client service.
My belief is that there will be post-Y2K winners from each strategy, but Alydaar's strategy is probably the easiest with which to foster non-Y2K business.
