<A> Cabletron -2-: Lucent Cited As Possible Suitor

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Shares of Cabletron Systems Inc. (CS) shot up as much as 11% Wednesday after the Rochester, N.H., networking company revealed that it will be "making a significant, strategic announcement" after the market closes.

Don Reed, Cabletron's president and chief executive, will make the announcement to industry analysts and the media at 4:15 p.m. EST. A separate conference for financial analysts only is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.

A Cabletron spokesman declined to comment further, saying all questions will be fielded after the announcement.

Wall Street traders said rumors are swirling throughout the investment community that Cabletron will be taken over by Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU). The traders said Cabletron could fetch a price of anywhere from $28 to $30 a share.

Lucent executives declined to comment on the rumors.

Cabletron recently was up 1 1/4, or 9.3%, at 14 11/16. Earlier, the NYSE-listed shares traded as high as 15.
