Jack -

<< I'm curious as to whether anyone has a system that would make a profit from the gyrations of MCD from 9/1/97 to date <<

Well I'll tell you one thing, my weekly system doesn't. That stock is trashy!!

Jack......I've been playing with an indicator that seems to track the old TSV indicator in TC2000 fairly closely, and it might work for a gyrating stock like MCD. You take the fundamental RSI formula and replace price change with the DI+ and the DI- indicators (PDI and MDI in MSWIN), as follows:

50-(100/(1+(PDI(8)/MDI(8))))

You will note that I subtract from 50 rather than 100 in order to create a Zero cross. I put up horizontal lines at 21,13,0,-13,-21 and THEN make the indicator invisible. I put a 3 period EMA on the indicator (which I can see) and a 3 period EMA on the first EMA. The signals and the OB/OS are pretty good to follow the stock movement and they are pretty tight. The cross of the first EMA of its own EMA is the trigger. On the same template, I put just ADX to get an idea of the strength of whatever short term trend I'm in. In trending stocks (up or down), the indicator will move above and below Zero and will bounce off Zero often, indicating its general trend. I'm just starting to play around with this, but it may have some promise.
