'Asian Value',is it a myth or hogwash!

Worswick, I read your post to Sankar and I thought it was rather amusing. Being an Asian in the broader scheme of things (ie Indian)and an American at the same time, I really don't know which side to take.

Obviously there are cultural differences between the West and the East, some subtle and some not so subtle.I don't know who came up with these terms 'Asian Value' and 'Asian Morality' etc, I suspect it might be the Western media. It might even be a cliche thrown around by intellectuals in the West to signify perhaps the differences in cultures. I haven't come across these terms while in Asia and hence my assumptions.

The point I want to make though is this and that is the basic human attributes whether in Asia or in the West or anywhere else for that matter is the same inspite of the cultural differences ,at least this has been my experience.

As for IMF and colonization etc, i would like to paraphrase this pronouncement by some Western politician and that is Countries don't have friends they have interests.

Colonization may be a strong word while describing IMF's actions.I suspect IMF and the West probably have an agenda and it may have more to do with INFLUENCE,BUSINESS INTERESTS,MONEY,ECONOMIC STABILITY etc and less to do with old colonial ambitions. One thing to remember though is that there are many Western economists who question the effectiveness of IMF's actions.Since I am not a practicing economist, I can't say for sure whether this criticism is justfied or not.

<<<<I must say Sankar I don't know how to take your fears of the re-colonization of Asia. It seems to me that the Indians I know have done a good job of "colonizing" both the financial sector and the medical sector in this country.>>>

You have forgot 'Software' profession.

<<<After all the Indian-landed immigrants in the US are something over a million souls. I know of only one person who immgirated from the West to India.>>>

Oh,there are more than one. There is this old guy Baker an architect from Britian in my home state. His houses are rather famous there. You are not talking about him are you?

<<<I think what I have say deals the realm of Asian verities, a feeling perhaps that Asians are somehow morally superior to mere money grubbing other mortals.>>>

Asians morally superior? Well at least you don't have to worry about me on that count,I am all about decadence. As for money grubbing bit, I am as good or a better 'money grubber' than the next guy.

<<<remember when you were growing up that the US had "notes" for food-aid received by India.... >>>>

I think you may be refering to PL480 or some such thing aren't you,i think the aid was mostly in wheat. Well, I have you know I come from the South and we don't eat wheat all that much there, mostly rice, vegetables and a lot of fish.So I didn't get any of them wheat,so don't look at me, I know nothing.

Surely I jest, hope you don't mind.

I think you are mis-reading/mis-understanding my posts and I do not find it worthwhile to enter into a discussion.
