I myself am partial to lessening the danger by reducing magazine capacity. Does any hunter need more than six rounds? I don't see why. Give a reasonable period to turn in big magazines, after which big fines and seizures of all guns would occur. Offer large rewards for turning in scofflaws, maybe the person turning them in gets all their guns too. While at it, ban anything that turns a semi-automatic into a machine gun. Republicans haven't even been able to do THAT!
