some kid isn't going to kill 17 people in a couple minutes with a club.

Once again, innocents were butchered with a weapon of war that has no place in civilian life. Once again, that weapon of war was wielded by a disturbed individual who bought it legally, had no business owning it or any gun, and was known to the FBI

Second Amendment for the next 200 years but it will never say that civilians have the right to carry military weapons. There were 44 active shooter incidents in American schools between 2000 and 2015 that killed 132 people and wounded another 136

we stigmatize mental illness and provide too many financial and other barriers to treating it. We need to be clear – a 19-year old man who demonstrated a long history of unstable behavior should never be able to legally purchase an AK-47

Guns are not the problem - but our society is increasingly the problem and it is getting worse fast. The mindset from the top down starting with Trump is one of the saddest changes I've witnessed in my life. Anyone who really thinks that Trump does not encourage hatred and division in our society is just off their rocker. When the President constantly lies with impunity and clearly pushes the race issue what should we expect but increasing senseless violence.

Guns are not the problem - but the thinking that allows big magazine guns that are meant for only one purpose - to kill mass numbers of people fast is. That a 19 year old in high school should be allowed to buy this kind of a gun is nuts! ........... To blame it on mental health is pathetic rationalizing of our real problem.

Sounds like you believe the guns are the core problem. That if only you could somehow take them back that would end the problem.

Looks like my point isn't registering with you, either. (Ain't it sweet to have something in common with koan?) So, I will try again point out that conditions exist on a path and that dealing with a situation varies depending on the point on the path.

Unlike the US, Japan never had guns. We, OTOH, have a long history of gun ownership and gun use and an associated culture to match. The result of removing the guns from the latter is not the same as never having had them in the first place. One cannot expect a US suddenly absent guns to be Japanish. Nor can one expect the attempted removal of the guns to be received by the populace with the disinterest of the Japanese.

So, from where comes the belief that removal of guns stops this problem of a society in random killing is seen as acceptable by an apparently growing number?

One wonders what the substitute weapon of choice would turn out to be. Machetes would probably be less threatening, IEDs, more so.
