The Australian data is not an outlier, though. It correlates strongly with the experiences in other countries and even our own. While it is theoretically possibly that other means could be used, the reality is that only a few avail themselves of alternate methods. Most just keep those things as violent fantasies.

For the mass killers, poison or IEDs don't have the same potential for a violent confrontation with law enforcement and suicide either directly or by proxy. For the more run of the mill suicides, other methods tend to take a lot of effort, and most of them just don't have that in them. As least in my personal experience. Yeah, I know, anecdotes...
