My concern on these shootings is that we lose focus on the problem instantly and never come close to any real ideas.

I think that's because there really aren't any good options and at some level we know it.

"Where is the outrage against the drug companies? Almost every one of these (mentally ill) shooters is on some kind of meds for mental illness!"

So people just pick their favorite general target, many of which are clearly jokes. Upthread you mentioned hardening targets. At lunch yesterday a friend commented that to protect schools we'd have to have only one secured entrance and exit and lock the kids in during school hours. I haven't read much about this incident but I have not seen any discussion about how this shooter was let in. I am very much out of touch about conditions on school campuses nowadays and know only what I see on TV dramas, which lead me to believe that kids are screened at the door and others, even parents, can't just walk in. Obviously that wasn't the case here. If not, seem to me that is a ripe target for blame, certainly better than drug companies.
