When polls showed 60% of republicans weren't sure President Obama was born in the US I knew the dumbing down of the party was complete. On our best of days we can maybe hope to get half of the people who are not nuts (40/2=20%). The rest are beyond redemption. Did you see the poll that shows republicans think colleges and universities are bad for America? "Whereas 54 percent of Republicans said "colleges and universities had a positive impact on the way things were going in the country" in 2015, the majority now believe the opposite, with 58 percent saying such institutions negatively impact the state of the union." We're looking at a good 60% of them who grew up listening to hate radio and hate TV and now hate everyone who doesn't conform to their small view of the world.
