Now Saudis are giving a bit of a nod to a few ideas such as women driving cars and maybe not being swathed in burkas.
I think it's more profound than a bit of a nod.

Sauds seemed to have managed to turn off the Wahhabs. Have turned off the religious police.
Are bringing women into public life.
Are reforming their entitled classes.
Are slowly doing away with patronage society and therefore the foreign worker racket.
Are officially denouncing persecution of SA Shiites.
Are acting against Jihadi terrorism; not just turning off the money.
Are making nice with Israel.

These are big deals and they weren't set up overnight. In '79 the Wahhabs had the Sauds on the ropes and made them go ultra fundamentalist.

When Trump turned up in Arabia last Spring with his gorgeous women dressed in the height of Western fashion, the women got huge play in local media. This was not an accident. The crown prince visited Trump six times, I think, between the election and Trump's visit. Trump sends his son in law there.

Trump isn't telling the Saudis what to do. They're coordinating.
