TYTDEATHWATCH->Young Turks Slashes Staff, Drops Entertainment Programming

Layoffs come just two months after some of the channel’s most senior on-air talent including Nomiki Konst and Hannah Cranston were let go

Jon Levine | August 28, 2018 @ 4:27 PMLast Updated: August 28, 2018 @ 5:13 PM

YouTube
The Young Turks slashed more staff this week and ended a number of their non-political programs, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to TheWrap on Tuesday. Among the shows hit were “What The Flick” co-hosted by TheWrap reviews editor Alonso Duralde, “Pop Trigger,” and “Nerd Alert.”

The company declined to say how many employees were affected, but a different individual with knowledge of situation tells TheWrap that at least 15 people were affected in the latest layoffs, and that since June the company has let approximately 25 people go. According to the individual, morale is low as the have layoffs affected studio employees such as editors, crew and members of TYT’s publishing team, as well as entertainment hosts and producers.

The latest cuts come less than two months after the network ousted some of the channel’s most senior on-air talent including Nomiki Konst and Hannah Cranston.

Reps for the company at Sunshine Sachs declined to provide a statement to TheWrap, instead directing us to a statement it provided to the website Tubefilter about the layoffs.

“TYT Network made programming changes that resulted in retiring entertainment shows in order to double down and focus on being the Home of Progressives. These entertainment shows had a great run and we will miss them. We want to thank every host and producer, past and present, for their hard work and dedication,” the statement to Tubefilter read. “At TYT, the Home of Progressives, we are energized by our renewed focus on the news and politics coverage that has dominated the network. It is more important now than ever to channel our resources and hold the establishment accountable.”

“A statement from TYT on this is public. We won’t have further comment,” said a spokesperson. “Tubefilter covered.”

The cutbacks are the latest bad news for a company that was flying high just one year ago. In August, 2017 the Young Turks raised $20 million in a round of funding led by Hollywood mogul, Jeffrey Katzenberg.

Since that time, the company has been rocked not only by cutbacks, but also scandals including revelations about old blog posts from founder Cenk Uygur in which he said women were genetically “flawed” because they didn’t want to have sex with him enough. He later apologized for his comments, telling TheWrap they no longer reflect his views and that he made them while he was a “conservative.”

Cenk’s nephew Hasan Piker also drew fire for old videos of his short lived series “bro tip” which aimed to teach men how to pick up women. Among the comments in the segment was Piker’s advice that, “It’s time to separate her from her herd, meaning her crowd of girlfriends who are going to do their best to c—block you because they’re fat and lonely.”

Report: Beto O’Rourke Tried to Flee Scene of Drunk-Driving Crash

By Benjamin Hart@realaxelfoley

During his high-profile run for Senate against Ted Cruz, Democrat Beto O’Rourke has not shied away from discussing a troubling element of his past: an arrest for drunk driving in September 1998, the day after he turned 26.

But a new story in the Houston Chronicle claims that there’s an important part of the story that the Texas Congressman hasn’t addressed. According to records acquired by the paper, O’Rourke was not only nabbed for driving under the influence; he caused what could have been a catastrophic accident, then tried to flee the scene. Neither detail had previously been made available to the public. The Chronicle reports:

“State and local police reports obtained by the Chronicle and Express-News show that O’Rourke was driving drunk at what a witness called “a high rate of speed” in a 75 mph zone on Interstate 10 about a mile from the New Mexico border. He lost control and hit a truck, sending his car careening across the center median into oncoming lanes. The witness, who stopped at the scene, later told police that O’Rourke had tried to drive away from the scene.”

The 1995 records, obtained from the Texas Department of Public Safety, are based in large part on the testimony of a witness who reported seeing O’Rourke’s vehicle speed by him at 3 a.m. on September 27, 1998. After the accident, the same witness helped prevent O’Rourke from leaving the aftermath of the accident. There were no injuries at the scene; criminal charges were dismissed.

As the Chronicle notes, O’Rourke once told the El-Paso Times that he had been driving an intoxicated friend home, but no friend was mentioned in the police report.

In a statement issued on Thursday, O’Rourke repeated what he has said before: that he regrets the incident.

“I drove drunk and was arrested for a DWI in 1998,” O’Rourke said. “As I’ve publicly discussed over the last 20 years, I made a serious mistake for which there is no excuse.” The “serious mistake” wording was identical to the formulation he used in a Chronicle op-ed he wrote earlier this week. The piece addressed his past mistakes, which also include an arrest for jumping a fence in 1995, through the lens of criminal-justice reform.

Texas Republicans have already slammed O’Rourke for the drunk-driving incident, most recently in a tweet earlier this week, which took him to task for skipping a debate with Cruz. (In the same thread, the GOP also went after O’Rourke for having a social life in the early 1990s, a tactic that backfired.)

There's always the chance that Robert “Beto” O’Rourke won’t debate Senator Cruz because he got into a hazy situation...

But it remains to be seen how potent an attack line the new revelation could be for Cruz’s campaign.

It’s true that drunk-driving offenses are nothing new for Texas voters — former governor George W. Bush once pleaded to driving under the influence, an incident that came out in the press just before he won the presidency in 2000, and did not seem to hurt his standing in the eyes of Texans. But O’Rourke came closer to causing death and destruction than Bush. Rourke has also positioned himself as a forthright chronicler of his own imperfect past, and the fact that he left out a key part of it may hurt his reputation for candor.

So far, the Cruz campaign has not commented on the Chronicle report.

The charismatic O’Rourke has embraced a strategy of staying true to his liberal bona fides and activating a wide swath of previously apathetic voters, as he crisscrosses the state, raising eye-popping fundraising totalsexclusively from small donors. Recent polls show Cruz clinging to a single-digit lead in a state that hasn’t elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994. The race has become so competitive that Cruz has resorted to asking his ex-adversary President Trump — who, during the 2016 campaign insinuated that Cruz’s father had a hand in killing John F. Kennedy and has attacked Cruz’s wife’s looks — for help. On Friday, the president confirmed that he would step in.

I will be doing a major rally for Senator Ted Cruz in October. I’m picking the biggest stadium in Texas we can find. As you know, Ted has my complete and total Endorsement. His opponent is a disaster for Texas - weak on Second Amendment, Crime, Borders, Military, and Vets!

Cruz is not likely to stay quiet about O’Rourke’s omissions. But if there’s anyone willing to really exploit a personal flaw, it’s our president.

SOCIALIST STATE SENATE CANDIDATE CAUGHT LYING ABOUT SUPPOSED ‘WORKING-CLASS BACKGROUND’

3:55 PM 09/01/2018
Joe Simonson | Media Reporter

A socialist millennial running for a state senate seat in New York is facing further scrutiny about her campaign after her brother implied she has been dishonest about her family upbringing in several interviews with leftist outlets.

Julia Salazar, an ally Democratic Socialists of America member Alexandria Orcasio-Cortez, has centered her campaign, among many things, on her ability to relate to the issues faced by her constituents. ( RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: New York State Senate Socialist Candidate Gentrifies Neighborhood Living In New Luxury High Rise)

Yet reporting by City & State New York reveals that Salazar might be deliberately misrepresenting her personal story in a bid to appear as an authentic representative of Americans struggling paycheck to paycheck.

According to her brother Alex Salazar, the two grew up in a “middle class” house “along the river” in a “beautiful neighborhood” in Jupiter, Florida, thanks to her father’s “six-figure paycheck.”

In previous interviews, like one she gave to the leftist Jacobin Magazine, Salazar spoke about her family struggling as her “mom ended up raising my brother and me as a single mom, without a college degree.”

“[I grew up in a] working-class background,” Salazar told Jacobin.

A picture of Salazar’s childhood home obtained by City & State shows a residence far from an average person’s idea of “working class.”

While Salazar has claimed she was “raised by a single mom who didn’t have a college degree,” City & State found records that her mother, Christine Salazar, received a B.A. in psychology from Florida Atlantic University in 1999. Florida Atlantic also confirmed that her mother matriculated from the university.

Salazar’s dishonesty is consistent with previous reporting from The Daily Caller News Foundation.

On Aug. 22, TheDCNF revealed that Salazar currently resides in a new luxury building in the hip neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Salazar’s campaign initially declined to comment on the story, but after the story was published, Salazar disputed that her building was considered “new,” despite it being built just four years ago.

“I’m a tenant in a 3-unit walk-up that was built 4 years ago. There is no doorman, no luxury amenities,” Salazar tweeted.
