Lately, all of the mass shootings have either been a semi-automatic handgun or an AR-15 or derivative.

The majority of mass shootings, esp. with the loose and easy to qualify definition often used for mass shootings, have been with handguns.

Has there ever been a mass shooting in America in a police station?

=====================

The number of deaths by shotgun has been far less than the number of deaths by AR-15s and its derivatives since 1989.

Lately, all of the mass shootings have either been a semi-automatic handgun or an AR-15 or derivative.

Unfortunately, most statistics combined Semiauto & hunting rifles. However, Politifact apparently found this:

"Semi-automatic rifles similar to the AR-15 have been used in high-profile and deadly mass shootings over the years in Aurora, Colo.; Roseburg, Ore.; San Bernadino, Calif.; Newtown, Conn.; Orlando; and in 2017, Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs, Texas."

Aurora (12)
Roseburg (9)
San Bernardino (36)
Newtown (26)
Orlando (49)
Las Vegas (58)
Sutherland Springs (26)
And now, Florida (17)

Hence, to date, about 233 people have been killed in mass shootings where at least one assault rifles was present.

According to Wiki, 7 of the last 10 "deadliest" shootings included at least one semi-auto, two were exclusively handguns, and 3 were a combination. Almost all of the Semi-autos were in the last 3-4 years, plus 2012.

But major killings like Va. Tech, Lubys, McDonalds, all the way back to Texas Tower (which did involve one semi-auto among many weapons), the post office, etc., did NOT involve semi-autos (except the Tower, where it wasn't the principal weapon).

NOW

The argument today is over the knee-jerk reaction demanding the banning of AR15 styled rifles. And yes, they have been chosen for several of the most recent shootings -- they do have certain advantages.

But it is a very long stretch from there to "banning these will decrease the number of killings."

We've seen numerous mass shootings involving handguns that killed many people. More, in total, than the recent AR15s.
