I doubt a study like that exists, although there are plenty of studies showing that our previous ban had no material effect on the shootings. But you don't need it.

We had mass killings before assault weapons. Unless you're blindly asserting that the recent uptick is a direct result of assault weapons (which have been around for decades now but inexplicably have started being a major problem only in the last decade), then I'm not sure what you are missing.

There is plenty that should be studied about this situation and I would not object to this topic being part of it. But it seems pretty apparent Charles Whitman, although having an assault rifle, chose to climb the tower with numerous weapons, most of which were used to kill someone.

A nutjob who is going to kill can use any of a very large number of weapons to do it.
