I don't consider it a major issue myself. Although at the time when the federal "assault weapons" ban was passed I was in the National Guard and had considered the idea of buying an AR-15 in part (but not only) to get some extra practice. Not a major issue, but not a zero one either.

Within the framework of your question the big issue to me is the black market creation. Going beyond the framework of your question the big issues are the ones I put aside to answer your question. The constitutional objections, the libertarian objections, the practical difficulties of getting any law passed and of enforcing it if it is passed, and the likely lack of positive impact from passing such bans.
