" There's enuf black market stuff out there that they'll be able to do what they want, so there will have to be a pretty big stick to beat them with, when they get caught. "People who are going to commit many murders are not worried about the legal details" True, but there's a difference between a gun nut and a nut with a gun, and if the former doesn't have one that shoots 60 rounds/min, the latter might not be able to get one. Whatever happened to those well-regulated militias?
