While it isn't for everyone, if I'm a teacher my first most important job is the safety of my classroom. If there is a man in the hallway with a gun, the worst conceivable situation is for me to be in the classroom, unarmed, trying to stand in front of twenty students to prevent their murder. Organizational design? Ha. Every school can't have a private SWAT team. Please don't try to apply normal bureaucratic solutions to this most nonlinear of situations, because we are only going to end up with mores dead students if we do that. This challenge requires thoughtful intervention.
