3/2/2018 Contest update
Just finished reading “Fantasyland” by Kurt Andersen. Andersen’s thesis is that Americans are especially susceptible to magical thinking and charlatans promoting all sorts of fantastical notions -- from religious to medical to financial to political. He provides numerous examples to support his thesis, beginning with the first European settlers in Jamestown and Plymouth Rock and ending with the 2016 election. A tour of “Fantasyland” is likely to be instructive for investors in stocks, especially biotechs. ;~)
Meanwhile, following a nice end-of-week biotech bounce, at Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 12.74% YTD (vs. up 12.46% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 2.78% YTD (vs. up 3.74% YTD a week ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 8.50% YTD (vs. up 9.17% YTD a week ago), with the Nasdaq Composite Index (IXIC) up 5.13% YTD (vs. up 6.29% YTD a week ago).
RKRW’s portfolio, up 42.41% YTD, remained Contest leader, with STEVEL’s portfolio, up 37.70% YTD, holding on to second place and JASON’ portfolio, up 34.39% YTD, moving up to third place.
At Friday's close, 57 of the 62 Contest portfolios were still in the green, with an impressive 54 beating the NBI and equally impressive 42 beating the SPSIBI.
The 230 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of 9.87% and a median YTD gain of 3.77%.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy a safe and fun first March weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba

3/9/2018 Contest update
Whether you’re tops in the Contest or your real world stock picks have made you bundles of dough, there’s no reason for hubris. At least that is what’s suggested by the research described in this article:
technologyreview.com
Of course, anyone (including yours truly) who ever picked a winning stock believes the above finding is Fake News. ;~)
Meanwhile biotechs had a boffo week and, at Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 17.35% YTD (vs. up 12.74% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 7.15% YTD (vs. up 2.78% YTD a week ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 13.78% YTD (vs. up 8.50% YTD a week ago), with the Nasdaq Composite Index (IXIC) up 9.52% YTD (vs. up 5.13% YTD a week ago).
RKRW’s portfolio, up 44.99% YTD, held on to the Contest lead, but closing in were second place STEVEL’s portfolio, up 43.83% YTD, and third place JASON’s portfolio, up 42.65% YTD.
At Friday's close, 59 of the 62 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 54 still beating the NBI and 38 now beating the SPSIBI.
The 230 Contest stock picks have an awesome average YTD gain of 15.68% and median YTD gain of 8.09%.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
