National plans Cyrix MPU capacity
to produce 10 million units in 1998

By J. Robert Lineback

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--National Semiconductor Corp. here is gearing up
to increase the production of Cyrix 6x86MX processors. It is moving the
processor to a new 0.25-micron process technology and planning to have in
place enough manufacturing capacity worldwide to ship 10 million 6x86MX
chips to PC makers this year.

Today, National announced it has successfully produced functioning
6x86MX processors on a quarter-micron process in a pilot fab in Santa
Clara.
In the summer, National plans to start volume production of
6X86MX processors in its plant located in South Portland, Maine. The chip
will be the first Cyrix Corp. product fabricated by National following its
$530 million acquisition of the Richardson, Tex.-based MPU supplier (see
Nov. 17 story).

While National is moving to produce Cyrix processor in its fab, the Santa
Clara-based company said it plans to continue its foundry agreement with
IBM Inc.'s Microelectronics Division, which has been producing 6x86MX
processors for more than a year.

National also said it has foundry agreements with Asian manufacturers, and
in 1998, the company expects to be able to ship 10 million 6x86MX
processors to customers using a combination of internal and external fab
capacity.

"The Cyrix 6x86MX offers the best price/performance combination in the
industry," said Brian Halla, chief executive officer of National. "The
6x86MX's superior architectural design, compact size, and low power
consumption make it ideal for the rapidly-growing sub-$1,000 and $1,500
mid-range desktop PC marketplaces."

The quarter-micron process technology will reduce the 6x86MX chip size
from 150 square millimeters to 88 square millimeters.

"This is a very exciting milestone for both National and Cyrix," said Kevin
McDonough, vice president and general manager of Cyrix. "The integration
of Cyrix's state-of-the-art microprocessor design with National's
world-class manufacturing capability is proceeding smoothly, allowing us to
dramatically increase production and reduce the costs of the 6x86MX
processor in record time."

Doc, et. al. Cymerites - Q4 EPS est. based on the Q3 Cymer press release:

<< On a sequential basis, third quarter revenue increased 15 percent compared with revenues of $50,132,000 in the second quarter of 1997. Third quarter operating income increased 21 percent compared with operating income of $7,970,000 in the second quarter...

...... "Based on our September 30, 1997 backlog and significant orders received since the close of the third quarter, and on customer forecasts, we currently expect continued sequential revenue growth for at least the next two quarters," said Robert Akins, president and chief executive. >>
--------------------------------------------------------------

Given this guidance, I guess reasonable expextations for Q4 should be(making the extrapolations):

Revnue-------------- 66.09
Operating Income---- 11.62
Net Income-----------8.26(my est. based on 12.5 % of total Rev)
Shares -------------- 30.5
EPS ----------------- 0.27

Maybe knock of a cent or two for the strong dollar?
Some food for thought...

-----------------------------Quarterly
12 Mo Tr. Avg-------------Revnue Breakdown % (not a 12 mo Tr. avg)
0f DUV unit sales------Product------Service

95--Q4-- 468,128---------89.80----------10.20
96--Q1-- 454,060---------91.20-----------8.80
-----Q2--433,305---------93.50-----------6.50
-----Q3--440,305---------97.47-----------2.53
-----Q4--430,230---------97.80-----------2.20
97--Q1---429,778---------98.56-----------1.44
-----Q2--432,738---------99.80-----------0.20
-----Q3--435,523---------97.50-----------2.50

Have the higher margin service revenues bottomed in Q2 and begun to expand? This would make sense if some of Cymer's installed DUV base (584) from 1986 till Q3 97 have come off warranty.
I wonder how many of the older models are still functional?
Anyway the Pt. is more DUVs are in the field operational
and will eventually come off warranty as the bugs are worked out.
Meaning an expansion of service revenue as a % of toal revenue.
The 12 month avg. DUV unit price has also crept up a bit but I'm unsure how to read that.
We'll find out soon enough.
