The new contracts bring the number of Russian cities utilizing DSC cellular systems to four. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. Celcore's AMPS GlobalSwitch(R) mobile switching center and GlobalCell(R) base stations have received Type Approval in Russia and were first installed in Smolensk, a city of 355,000 people located 400 km west of Moscow. Since initial deployment in August 1996, subscriber growth in Smolensk has prompted the expansion of one base station and the addition of two new GlobalCell base stations. The Smolensk system is operated by Millicom International Cellular S.A. and the local PTT. Millicom International Cellular S.A., based in Luxembourg, is a worldwide cellular telecommunications company. It currently has interests in 31 operations in 20 countries. Millicom will also operate a new Celcore system in the industrial city of Bratsk, home to 459,000 residents. Bratsk is located approximately 4,000 km east of Moscow in the remote region of Irkutsk. This system will initially utilize a GlobalSwitch MSC-24 and two GlobalCell base stations. Saransk, a city of 320,000, will have cellular service provided by RTCOMM, a local Russian telecommunications company, using a GlobalSwitch MSC-8 and three GlobalCell base stations. Saransk is approximately 650 km southeast of Moscow. Celcore equipment is also deployed in Nazran, capital of Ingushetia, by CJSC Imperativ, another local Russian telecommunications company. Ingushetia is a free trade zone and has a population of 300,000. It is located in the Northern Caucasus mountain region 1,500 km south of Moscow. The GlobalSwitch is a family of compact, modular Mobile Switching Centers that can be flexibly configured to connect to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The GlobalCell base station provides reliable, economical cellular coverage with rapid deployment and low operating costs. The Network Management System features an easy to use graphical interface for case of operation and maintenance. Designed specifically for the needs of the emerging markets, Celcore systems have low start-up and operating costs and can be scalable for a wide range of low-subscriber density applications.
