To be precise, it described an automatic weapon firing a non-handgun round. It fit somewhere between a submachine gun like the Tommy gun and that Hollywood favorite, the M3, and the heavier machine guns that were usually operated by two people and bipod or vehicle mounted. The StG-44 was also known at the MP-43 and MP-44 which were minor variants of the same rifle.

This is yet another example of your fan dances. The claim was that the term "assault rifle" to describe the AR-15 class of weapons was a recent product of the gun control crowd. Because, you know, scary black rifles. The reality is that the term was a product of the gun industry itself. To give a greater air of machismo of the product to people who are insecure in their manhood.
