Now yahoo can start charging membership fees.

Maybe, but just exactly what content on Yahoo! would one be willing to pay for? AOL, MSN, etc. have unique content while Yahoo! has little (if any).

This is not that significant. YHOO will not be charging membership fees for access to their web site, all it means is that when you open your browser it will go to YHOO. MCI will almost assuredly handle the administration, billing, etc. of this venture and I believe it's the standard $19.95/month for unlimited use. YHOO will get some marginal revenue from this most likely, and they do get some PR. YHOO put out the press release, not MCI.

YHOO could not inflate earnings by selling advertising to itself, although it could be possible if they were a bit short they could have had Softbank purchase some ads near the end of December.

U is unknown, as Peter indicated. Just my 2 cents worth. <G>
