Michael and all, Bellwether tech buying leads Nasdaq to close up

NEW YORK, Jan 12 (Reuters) - The Nasdaq Composite Index gained more than four points Monday after losing as many as 37 earlier in the day, as investors flocked to bellwether technology issues while waiting to assess the effect of Asia's economic turmoil on U.S. companies, traders said.

"If you think the market might go up, but you're concerned about the risks, you go to the larger caps," one trader said. "That was the story played out today."

The index unofficially finished up 4.38 points, or 0.29 percent, at 1507.60 on unofficial volume of more than 697 million shares. Declines led advances 2,963 to 1,610.

A plunge in Hong Kong stocks overnight prompted the index's
morning drop. By late morning, however, investors had begun to snap up big tech stocks, while staying clear of small caps, driving the index higher.

Big gainers included bellwethers Intel Corp INTC.O, up
3-3/4 to 75-5/8, Microsoft Corp MSFT.O, up 2-1/2 to 129-1/2,
and Dell Computer Corp DELL.O, which gained 3-14/16 to 87-16. Cisco Systems Inc CSCO.O rose 1-7/16 to 55-11/16, while Oracle Corp ORCL.O fell 11/16 to 18-1/16.
