I contacted Zenith to inquire as to why the series of January 8th press releases did not receive widespread distribution. This was the reply, received today, from John Taylor at Zenith: "[the] news releases [were] targeted for the trade press. It's premature to promote HDTV or the Intel alliance at this time to the consumer and business press. When these products get closer to reality, you'll be hearing more from us and see more activity in the wire services."

My response to Zenith and its public relations staff - WAKE UP!

Noted that Taylor used the word "alliance" versus partnership when describing the INTC/ZE trade announcement.

Many possible alliance members for Zenith to play a central role.

Already announced as "best of breed" Zenith partners (or major customers) are: LGE, Intel, Microware, Americast, News Corp. Other possible alliance members include: a major DBS company such as Primestar (again Murdoch), Microsoft (something is brewing in Redmond regarding Zenith's VSB tech), CBS and/or Time Warner (major supporters of rapid HDTV implementation), Disney (Americast member); BellSouth, GTE, Ameritech and SBC (Americast members, too); maybe even a few studios like Paramount; and Citibank or other major financial dynamo.

The whole key is how to reach the maximum number of eyeballs and to open the most purses/wallets on a sustaining/very profitable basis. The stakes are humongous and VSB is central to all these plans. No one can deliver VSB transmissions to its customers without first going through Glenview.

My pure guess is that Intel and News Corp are the key "alliance" players. Intel produces about 75% of the world's PC chips and News Corp soon will reach 75% of the world's eyeballs.

If I was John Taylor, I'd be sitting on this, too. At least, until the ink becomes dry.
