Hee hee hee, wait 'til people are signing up for Web TV via cable modems and regular internet access via ADSL modems!

Saw an AOL ("AOL Canada" actually) ad today....I love how AOL takes credit for all of the generic websites people use...I saw some (including my online broker) being touted as if ONLY AOL users have access to them...when you have to rely on deception at this basic a level you know you're in trouble.

Jack, I'll bet it costs Yahoo next to nothing to start this service. I would guess that MCI came to them and said something like you do the front end, we'll do the network and give you, say, 3 bucks a customer. This is very good for Yahoo. No overhead, very little development of content they don't already have and zap-they're competing with AOL, whose network expenses are crushing.

AOL can't make money at $20 plus all that revenue from shoving ads down your throat--and now the possibility of a better service for 25% less? What's is AOL's P/E again?

What is incredible about all this is that if even a successful company, one that actually made money, were in a similar situation, the increasing competition would undoubtedly be reflected in the stock price. AOL, on the other hand, is up today and it hasn't made any money--I believe they're still in the hole, on a cumulative basis, since they went public. They've owned the market and couldn't make money, what happens now that everyone is going after them with better services and better pricing?
