How bad the situation in China? That really depends on how you look at it -- half empty or half full? Yes, as a country with the largest population on earth (at least up to now) and not much natural resources, there are a lot of problems in China -- social, economic, and political. But still the growth rate (GDP) in China in 1997 managed to be 8.8%, and it is likely to maintain in 1998. I am wondering how many countries on this planet have made an average growth rate of 9%+ for over 12 years? And one more thing, those ADRs have nothing to do with 95% of ordinary Chinese everyday life. You can find very few people in China who really concern what's happened in the stock market. So if you use those ADRs as an indicator for the economic situations in China, you will be misled.
Good luck.
