There is a really good editorial today by Tom Friedman. He uses a metaphor about Bedouin chief who discovered his favorite turkey had been stolen. When the thieves saw they could get away with stealing the turkey, they returned to steal his camel and his horse. Once Trump saw he could get away with not disclosing his tax returns, he knew he could get away with anything. Even the evangelical Republicans would give him a pass on sex with Porn stars, endless lying, trashing the FBI and coddling Putin.
