Prior to Christianity the Roman Empire had been relatively tolerent to people of different faiths and people were free to follow different religions.
Is that why the early church was persecuted? Or does that not count?

Oh it doesn't count. Same mindset as Jesse, if you're black you can't be a racist. Attacking Christians is fair game even today.
