I assume you've heard of semiconductors and integrated circuits without which our weaponry could not have lead the world including the USSR.....In the 1970'a Soviet MiG fighter jets were still using vacuum tubes in their on board computers... I started with a company that was already developing silicon and germanium transistors and had them in manufacturing lines....ie we were making one transistor at a time on a chip about 1/2 the size of your little finger nail..... Any nation leading in that technology literally lead the world in weapons and more. It is still that way to this day as we now put 10's of billions of transistors on a chip...
