Since there have always been gay men, isn't that question kind of answered- at least in a de facto way? And if it were "choice" the percentage wouldn't be such a constant. It's clearly something that has evolved with human society. I like Neolib's point about the contributions of gay men (and women too- come to think of it. Lots of great lesbian writers.)
