Williams Speeds Data for Users By John Rendleman January 9, 1998 2:06 PM PST PC Week Williams Communications Group Inc., a network services company, last week re-entered the data services business with the announcement of major upgrades to both its ATM and frame relay networks. New switches from Ascend Communications Inc., of Alameda, Calif., will allow Williams Communications, of Tulsa, Okla., to increase the core switching capacity of its 11,000-mile, fiber-optic network from 622M bps to 2.4G bps. The upgrade will also let Williams provide new multiclass and multimedia services to its customers by year's end, officials said. The Ascend contract includes the recently introduced GX 550 core ATM switches, Ascend's CBX 500 multiservice ATM switches, B-STDX 9000 multiservice frame relay switches, and Ascend's Navis network and service management products. As the first beta tester of the switch, Williams successfully installed one of the GX 550 switches in its network laboratory and began carrying live data traffic on the switch within an hour of installation, said company officials. The network platform is expected to support more than 2 million connections and should provide extensive buffering of more than 10 million cell buffers, with speeds ranging from below 56K bps/64K bps to as high as 2.4G bps, said Williams executives. Williams announced its network upgrade program following the expiration of its non-compete agreement with LDDS WorldCom Inc., of Jackson, Miss., which purchased the data networking assets of the former WilTel from Williams Cos., the parent company of Williams Communications, three years ago. Now, Williams intends to sell wholesale data capacity to other carriers, which will in turn sell the services to end users. Williams Communications is at (800) 945-5426 or www.wilcom.com.
