Just compare the US ,to how people lived in 1918 without unemployment, benefits, food stamps, social security and medicare and modern laws and social programs. The economic and technological advancements since 1918 and the main reason for the higher standard of living, not government social programs. Economic and technological advancement doesn't require big government. OTOH our current level of social programs does require that the economic progress that has happened since then. Without the growth in private sector economic activity the social programs would be unaffordable.
