How about morality. You think we so much more moral now than then? That everyone's so good now, or even that those who share you political ideas are so wonderful and perfect? I don't.

You think morality requires big government? Or even that big government makes people so much more moral? That's silly.

As for FDR many things he did made the depression worse and/or longer. (Not everything, he had a few good ideas, but a lot of what he did was negative.) Also that's a distraction from the point, unless you think civilization didn't exist before FDR.
