Toshiba Delays Building Oita Plant Amid Memory Chip Slump

TOKYO (Nikkei)-Toshiba Corp. President Taizo Nishimuro announced Monday that construction of a new semiconductor plant in Oita, Kyushu, will be postponed by one or two years from its scheduled start next fiscal year. The electronic machinery maker has decided to delay its 150 billion yen investment amid a long-term slump in the memory chip market.
The ultramodern Oita plant was to go onstream in 2000 with cutting-edge minute-processing technology.
Toshiba has also suspended plans to build a 130 billion yen plant at its Iwate Prefecture subsidiary. Many industry analysts, including one from Mitsubishi Electric Corp., say fears of structural overcapacity are growing.
