I love to walk to the beach after (sometimes even during) a stormy high tide just to see what has washed up. I've never picked clams/mussels/oysters/scallops off the beach. I'll dig for them (and years ago, I picked mussels from whatever they were attached to) but won't pick them from the beach 'cause I don't know why they're there. Sounds like you had a good dinner that night though.

I grew up in the Puget Sound region and we used to see thousands of starfish but now they're all gone. At least on the Seattle side of the Sound.
