Friday’s penalties could be particularly painful for Mr. Putin’s regime. While #Russia’s oligarchs make money in Russia, many stash families, lovers & much of their wealth in London, New York and Miami.

Julia Davis @JuliaDavisNews
The FBI is investigating whether Alexander Torshin (top Russian banker with ties to the Kremlin) illegally funneled money to the National Rifle Association to help Donald Trump win the presidency …

#Russia's state media must be waiting for the official #Kremlin guidance on how to cover the new U.S. sanctions. For now - aside from perfunctory mentions of the sanctions - they are mainly concentrating on #Ukraine and #Skripal's guinea pigs.

Some further reflections on today’s Russia sanctions: (1) Putin will be pissed off since these go after key oligarchs & enablers with personal ties to the Kremlin; (2) these sanctions target their companies too, which packs a bigger punch than just individuals. <THREAD 1/9>

Putin’s key enablers are here: -Viktor Zolotov, head of Putin’s praetorian guard -Nikolai Patrushev, Putin’s KGB buddy and national security advisor -Vladimir Bogdanov, rumored to manage Putin’s wealth <2/9>

Or take Evgeniy Shkolov, who’s almost unheard of but is key to doing Putin’s dirty work. See below <3/9>

Some big-time oligarchs are also on the list: Deripaska, Kerimov, Vekselberg. These guys aren’t inner circle but they are enablers, which is why their designations send a chill throughout the oligarch class. <4/9>

Some of the wealthy kids of Putin’s friends are also here, like Igor Rotenberg, whose dad is a Putin BFF, or Kirill Shamalov, who was married to Putin’s daughter and is an wealthy executive now. These designations will frighten the elite, who assumed kids were off limits. <5/9>

Plenty of mob-connected folks on this list too, but then you didn’t need me to tell you that. <6/9>

Finally, there are quite a few folks with connections to Trump. Recall Paul Manafort’s offer to brief Oleg Deripaska on the campaign? <7/9>

Or Viktor Vekselberg’s association with Wilbur Ross on the Bank of Cyprus? Vekselberg’s US-based operation also donated $250,000 to Trump’s inauguration fund. No, seriously <8/9>

I think we can expect the Kremlin to view these sanctions as a hostile act, no matter how much the White House distances itself rhetorically from these actions. The good cop/bad cop shtick is over. So the bottom line here is this is a step in the right direction. <END>

Well chosen targets, so guarantees Trump didn’t choose them. Can you explain what group makes the decision of who to go after? State Department? Senate?

State dept and US treasury had been jointly working on this since last summer
