INS Survey Identifies Key Network Operations Center Issues Facing Large-Scale Organizations PR Newswire - January 13, 1998 16:31 INSS %CPR V%PRN P%PRN SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- International Network Services (Nasdaq: INSS), a worldwide provider of services and solutions for complex enterprise networks, unveiled the results of its latest industry survey focused on the Network Operation Center (NOC) issues facing large-scale organizations. For the purposes of this survey, INS defined a Network Operations Center as the combination of organization structures, staffing, processes, technology products and tools, and service providers used to provide reliable operational service levels to end-users of multi-vendor, heterogeneous, distributed networks. The increasing complexity and importance of today's communication networks and distributed systems has moved organizations to build more sophisticated NOCs to oversee their rapidly expanding network environments. INS found that only 31% of the survey participants are satisfied with their current network operations center capabilities. Nearly 80% rank improving NOC capabilities as very important or critical. Respondents identified the lack of experienced staff, other projects with higher priority and a lack of operational processes as the top three barriers to improving their network operations capabilities. Despite these issues, only 2% of the survey participants have outsourced their entire network operations to an external service provider. However, 29% have out-tasked selected network operations functions. The primary reasons given for not outsourcing their entire NOC function are that network operations are too critical to outsource, the outsourcing services are too expensive, and the current service provider capabilities are inadequate. This survey is the third in a series of Web-based research projects scheduled for the coming months by INS. These projects are intended to provide IT/Network Managers and business executives insight into key issues impacting their ability to develop and deploy network-centric business applications.
