Are you kidding? What do you think life was like before the 60's. People had to think and live according to right wing primitive ideology and religion. Religious dogma ruled the day along with racism, misogyny, homophobia and "organization man". Do you think atheists had an easy time in the past? Nothing is more important than freedom of thought and the press. But at the same time reprehensible things like insulting a persons race, or gender is a good thing to try and get people to stop doing. I don't understand why you have such a difficult time with this. You are talking about 60 or 70 years ago, during which time more historical change has occurred than during any such period in human existence, I suppose. This was a time when the world was transitioning from not understanding to understanding things that were previously explained by religion. From not having The Pill to having total control of birth control if one wants it. From a naive understanding of nuclear weapons to really getting it. From the United States being in the throes of Depression to being the most economically and militarily powerful country in the world. A time when we added 10 years to life expectancy, after a similar period when we added 20 years. The world then was a different place from what it is today. You should understand this.
