Yes, they did not want a state church like they had in Europe.

You do realize people disobeyed the church for hundreds of years at the risk of torture and death don't you?

Do you know what the penalty was for heresy and apostasy? And they were still calling women witches in the 1700's.

Now ask yourself why did the founding fathers single our the church??!! Could it have been their oppressive behavior?

And indeed, religion has dramatically demanded certain norms and mores and made life hard on people who did not obey.

Do you think atheists could declare their non belief without consequences? The church people made sure they would be ostracized.

One still cannot run as dog catcher if they are an atheist.

Well, I guess it's pretty obvious you have no clue, again, as to what is reality. The 1st Amendment mis-conception concerning 'separation' actually means the establishment of a religion. IOW, the gov't can't make everybody follow just one religion. It means nothing else.
