These things are really misguided at times. McCabe reportedly received 500K in contributions for his "lost pension" before it was explained that he didn't lose it, he just couldn't collect it at his current age of 50. Poor thing.

I do make those contributions sometimes but usually only to the neediest.

The first goal was $10,000 to cover travel expenses etc. and now their new goal is $4M and they're almost there. The biggest donor gave over $20,000.

People are weird. Give them a cause- no matter how stupid- and some of them will send a check. But it's quirky what plucks their heart strings. I guess it's like EBAY- you can see the same item sell for very different prices- or not at all. It's just quirky. Don't expect people to make sense. Life works better that way.

>>>Can anyone suggest to me why people would donate millions of dollars to the Canadian hockey team accident victims? <<<

The word sports fan is short for "fanatic." The sports market itself has huge revenue. In addition fans go to great sacrifice and personal expense to be able to follow their faves. I have never been able to relate personally but I think fanaticism might explain it.
